Barcelona’s opera house, El Gran Teatro del Liceo, was founded on the Rambla in 1847 and over the years has been one of the symbols of the city fulfilling its function as a cultural and artistic centre.
The architect who designed his plans was Miquel Garriga i Roca, later assisted by Josep Oriol Mestres. The building was rebuilt after the great fire that destroyed the hall and stage on January 31, 1994. The reconstruction was based on the original building and an extension of the project. It reopened on October 7, 1999.
