SMART BUILDING PROGRESS 2017 to 2020: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES. A report by First Q Network
Smart metering, heat pumps and electric vehicles are the most progressing smart technologies in Europe, whereas building energy storage and district heating are the least.

These are some of the conclusions of our 2020 study on the progress of the smart building technologies in our 12 European countries. The report was produced by Andrew Nolan (Granlund Oy, Finnish First Q member) with the support of the rest of members.

Italy and France were the two fastest improving countries in the different concepts covered by the SBRI (Smart Building Readiness Index), a rating established by the Buildings Performance Institute of Europe.

First Q members think that the SBRI is still too focused in smart energy efficiency, and it should open more to occupant experience and space management. According to First Q, poor facility management is the main reason for wasting energy. Also, another limitation factor is the existence of technological silos among different systems, that have to be overcome to work in single platform approach.

On the positive side, First Q members identify several business opportunities in the smart building services:

- Digital consultancy
- Facility management consultancy
- Energy consultancy: renewables, micro-grids
- X as a Service
